Andre Kirk Agassi has been one of the greatest professional tennis players in history. With a rollercoaster career he had shown to all the tennis world followers what it means to love the sport. For a total of 101 weeks he got to be the No.1 in the World rankings.

Taught by his father, Mike Agassi, Andre started playing at a very young age. At his short 16 he started his professional career and won his first top-level singles title at Itaparica on 1987.

No one ever reached a top-level as fast as Agassi did: in 1988 he won 6 tournaments and by the end of that same year he had earned more than $2 million in prize money, with only 43 tournaments played.

On those first years his image gave a lot to talk about, his long blond scruffy hair and his untraditional for a tennis player attitude and looks started to turn him into a showman and caught the people’s attention.

In 1990, the 20 year-old Andre got in to the French Open where he put the press upside down with his rebel outlook; in fact he named for the press, his fluorescent lycra, shirt and headband costume, the “Lycra, hot lava look”.

The president of the French and the International Tennis federations back in to those days, Philippe Chatrier, appreciated tradition and soon criticized Agassi’s unorthodox clothing, to what Agassi respond: “These bozos will look for anything to talk about. You should see my next outfit, if you think this one’s wild… I think you should have freedom to express what you feel. Wearing colors is what tennis needs. Without colors I’d still be me but I’d be more boring.”

During these years his rebelliousness against the All England Club’s rules about color clothing, kept him out of the Wimbledon Tournament. For three years he insisted that he didn’t possessed any suitable attire for the championships, in other words nothing in white color _ the request to all players is to wear only white cloth.

At his 21 he realized that while he was wasting his time with the press, his comrades Sampras, Chang and Courier were passing ahead him taking all the honors away, and leaving him on the back of the row. Therefore he accepted Wimbledon’s rules and went to the tournament that same year.

The acceptance to the regulations of the Centre Court gave Agassi his first Grand Slam, after he defeated Goran Ivanisevic in a tight five set final, in his second participation in the Wimbledon Open.

Agassi used a baseline style of play, thanks to his short backswing and excellent hand-eye coordination, he could made contact with the ball ‘inside’ the baseline _something really hard to do even for professional players. In fact John McEnroy among others called Andre the best service returner ever to play tennis; Brad Gilbert (coach) also said he was the best ball striker in the history of tennis.

Getting more focus Agassi started to care more about his healthiness and with that advantage began to use a new strategy that consisted on wear down his opponents, making them run too much. For this reason his opponents gave him the nickname “The Punisher”.

After a wrist surgery in 1993, he came back feeling and playing better than ever. As a result won his second Grand Slam at the US Open in 1994, after beaten Michael Chang in the quarterfinal and Michael Stich in the final.

Andre also founded during this time the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation created to provide recreational and educational opportunities for at-risk children in Southern Nevada; “I have been very blessed and had many opportunities available to me” said Agassi.

Next year Andre played against Pete Sampras in the Australian Open final, capturing is first triumph on this tournament after a great four set final. That year was probably the best one in his career; he won 72 matches and just lost 10 and for the first time and for 30 weeks in a row got to be World No. 1 in the ranking. In 1996 ‘The Punisher’ got the gold medal in the Atlanta Olympics after beating the Spain Sergi Bruguera in straight sets in the final.

However 1997 wasn’t going to be a good year. Agassi’s love for tennis was apparently being killed by Hollywood’s bad publicity. His turbulent relationship and marriage with the actress Brooke Shields, was keeping him away from his career. In November that year his ranking felt down to the World No.141 position and during the entire year didn’t won any top-level titles.

During 1998 he began to worry more about his performance and physical condition in the sport competitions. He participated in several events, always trying to get back in the track. By the end of the year he proved what an excellent and dedicated sportsman he turned into. Winning 5 titles in 10 finals and jumping on the rankings from the World No. 141 at the start of the year, to the No. 6 at the end of it; making it the highest leap to the top 10 ever made in history.

In 1999 got divorced after the 2-years-marriage with Shields. One down for love, but great things for his tennis career came along. Agassi beat Andrei Medvedev in a five-set French Open final, this way becoming the fifth man to won the four Grand Slams singles titles. As prove to his adaptability, Andre is also the only one of the quintet who won the four titles in four different surfaces. Plus he reached the final at the Wimbledon Open, where he lost to Sampras and later a second Us Open trophy gave the perfect finale to a World No. 1 Andre Agassi’s year.

Keeping a right patch 2000 and 2001 gave him two more Australian Open titles. In addition, during these two years Agassi awarded us with some of his best matches:

2000: what many people regard as one of the best matches ever seen at Wimbledon was the final against Patrick Rafter.
2001: at the Us Open quarterfinals played against his compatriot, Sampras although Andre lost it is considered to be one of tournament’s all-time greatest matches.

On October 22, 2001 Andre got married for the second time, with former tennis player Steffi Graf, who dated before his divorce Brooke Shields was over.

In 2002 one more time Agassi took part on the US Open final, alongside with his ‘archienemy’ Pete Sampras. On this match, that end up being their last duel, Sampras defeated “The Punisher”; after it, Pete stopped participating in competitions and in 2003 he officially retired. Meanwhile Andre’s victories at the Miami, the Rome and the Madrid Masters, helped him finish the year as the oldest year-end No. 2 at 32 years and 8 months.

On May 11, 2003 regained the top position in the world rankings, being the oldest player to hold that spot. His eighth Grand Slam arrived that year, in company with 2 ATP Tour titles and an ATP Master Series victory.

With 34 years, won his 17th ATP Masters Series title, the Cincinnati Masters; he won in 7of the nine Masters Series, missing only Hamburg and Monte Carlo. In 2005 he reached his current record of 60 titles, the last one in the ATP Tour in Los Angeles.

During the French Open in 2005 he lost against Jarkko Nieminen for a pain related to a pinched sciatic nerve. He kept playing in several events, but a persistent back injury continued troubling and at Wimbledon when he lost after the three rough sets with Rafael Nadal the media started to speculate about his retirement.

Agassi had a difficult start this year. He was still in recover from his back-leg and ankle pains. After all the suspense, he finally announced this year, on June 24, that the 2006 US Open was going to be his last tournament.

To play this week Agassi needed cortisone and anti-inflammatory injections for the pain, “I take pride in the striving” said Agassi about his situation and his decision to play until the end.

All his fans were wondering on Sunday if he was going to be able to fight back well against the 25-year-old Benjamin Backer. Since despite all the pain he was having and the extra-effort he was making, he made it through before, in his first two matches against Andrei Pavel and Marcos Baghdatis.

As we all know by now our dearest Andre couldn’t make it, although he pushed himself to the limit. Agassi was beaten on Sunday by the German, who was defeated the very next day by Andy Roddick.

By the end of the match we saw an Agassi with eyes full of tears as the crowd stand up and applaud him for around four minutes. Among the crowd his wife and kids showed him their support. Also joining the people in the ovation was Becker, who said later to the press: “He was my idol growing up”, as he gave his opinion about Agassi.

No one really cared about the scoreboard; ‘The Punisher’ gave more than what he was expected to give. He said to his fans in the field: “The scoreboard said I lost today… But what the scoreboard doesn’t say is what is I’ve found…”

I can say for all of his fans as well as for me that we are going to remember Andre Agassi forever, especially for those like me who grew up watching him ascend into the top positions.

His image, the desire of success and the effort, everything he gave us, was and is until today, somehow, inspiring. Even on his first rebel years he fought for what he believed in, when he felt he did all he needed to do to place back in the top, and there’s where lays the difference between greatness and mediocrity.

So, farewell Andre and thank you for everything you gave us in these wonderful 20 years!

Qigong is not just about exercise: Although it seems that today’s modern qigong is just another new age fad on exercise, traditionally, qigong practitioners viewed qigong as a way of life that incorporated so much more: diet, exercise, herbs and Chinese medicine — in fact, everything that worked towards total health and well being.

So the qigong practices I mention in these and other articles are not the modern qigong of merely exercise and belonging to a new age fan club, but of the traditional practice of preventive and holistic alternative health. In that context, I want to discuss the fifth qigong/chi kung practice for hypertension — hydration: Drink lots of water.

Water cleanses the body of toxins and provides much needed oxygen. We know we are supposed to drink at least six to ten glasses of water per day, but what kind of water?

Only the cleanest, purest kind.

Why not mineral or spring water? Because it contains minerals that our body can’t digest and creates mineral deposits that lead to all kinds of illnesses such as arthritic and sciatic nerve pain. These only add to the stress of toxins in our body, leading to high blood pressure and other diseases.

There are two types of minerals: organic minerals that come from plants and which we can digest, and inorganic from the soil. You wouldn’t eat rust to get your iron would you? Because that is what inorganic minerals are — minerals that our bodies cannot absorb. Instead they accumulate and get deposited in our joints, our bones and in our organs and muscle tissues, causing all kinds of dysfunction, stressing out our body.

Organic minerals come from fruits and vegetables, plants that use photosynthesis to convert inorganic minerals from the earth to organic compounds and nutrients that our body can digest.

So drink only the purest water that has undergone water distillation or reverse osmosis. Water distillation is a process where water is heated and condensed, leaving contaminants behind. The distilled water undergoes further filtration through carbonated charcoal to remove other particles that may have escaped the distillation process, thus leaving water that is 99.99% pure.

Another way to get pure water is through reverse osmosis: water is pushed through a membrane that filters out contaminants, then further treated with carbonated charcoal, again leaving clean water that is 99% pure.

How does drinking water help reduce hypertension? By hydrating the body, providing oxygen to dehydrated cells, promoting cell regeneration. It cleanses the body of toxins and softens stools for elimination.

The detoxification process helps to reduce the stress that toxins load on the body, toxins that otherwise would put added stress on the body’s normal functions, and we all know that one leading result of stress is hypertension.

So, oxygenate the body, flush out the toxins and you remove the stress and help reduce the high blood pressure.

Very few injuries that we commonly see can change a claimant’s life as dramatically as a “herniated disc”. Many similar terms are used almost interchangeably like “ruptured disc”, “disc protrusion” and “herniated nucleus pulposus”. Doctors often describe disc as being like a “jelly donut” between the vertebrae. When the disc material inside of the disc leaks out and touches on the “sciatic nerve”, severe pain often travels down the injured worker’s leg. Sometimes other structures are affected, like the “spinal cord” or the “spinal canal”. Disc injuries are most common found in the low back and neck and rarely occur in the mid-back. We see a lot of lumbar “laminectomies” in workers who do a lot of heavy lifting. A laminectomy or a microdiscectomy will often produce good results and in many instances injured workers will be able to return to rigorous work. If surgery is unsuccessful, a lumbar or cervical “fusion” may be needed. This often occurs with a condition called “spondylolisthesis” which involves a slippage of a vertebrae. In order to diagnose a disc problem an “MRI” is usually needed. If a condition is diagnosed as a “disc bulge” doctors will normally try treating the condition with physical therapy or steroid injections. If the MRI is negative, doctors may determine that they are dealing with a strained or sprained back or neck. Where surgery is contemplated, doctors will normally do a test called a “myelogram’ with a “cat scan” in order to get the best possible look at the problem. In those cases where multiple surgeries have been performed and a “fusion’ is the ultimate outcome, some injured workers may become “permanently totally disabled” which means that they are unable to work or compete in the “open labor market”. Everyone is different and it is difficult to generalize. I once had a client who had five surgeries, including a disc fusion, who had a body like Charles Atlas and was running 5 miles a day! In any event, if you are confronted with a serious back or neck injury, it is important to ask your attorney about the reputation of the doctor who is treating you.

There are two problems that are very common and they tend to go hand in hand with each other.  The first is that we tend to be overweight and it can be difficult to get that weight off whenever we are carrying it.  Therefore, we tend to be overweight for long periods of time and our body suffers as a result.

Another problem that we have is back pain and you would probably be surprised with the number of people that experience pain in the backs on a regular basis.  The simple fact of the matter is, these two things are connected more often than not.

The reason why carrying around additional weight is bad for your back is because the spine supports your body and if it has to support extra weight, it compensates by bending or compressing.  You may also have a problem where your hips shift forward in order to compensate for extra weight that you are carrying around and this can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Imagine picking up a box that weigh 20 pounds and carrying it around with you all day long.  Even though it may seem light at first, eventually it would be too heavy for you handle.  Now imagine the extra weight that your body is carrying every day and it is little wonder that your back is sore.

In order for you to overcome this problem you need to take off some of the weight that you have been carrying around.  There are a number of different ways for you to do this but you want to make sure that you lose the weight in a way that it is going to be permanent.  The easiest way for you to do this is by adding things to your diet, not taking them away.  For example, every time you sit down for a meal add a glass of water and some raw fruits and vegetables.  This will not replace your meal but it will keep you from eating so much at one sitting.

You should also make sure that you are getting some exercise, paying particular attention to your core muscles as these will help your back in a number of different ways.  By combining diet and exercise and adopting a healthy way of life you can overcome back problems once and for all.

A body pillow is most certainly a pregnant girl’s best friend, especially in the latter months of pregnancy. Don’t be misled to think that carrying a small child in your belly is a prerequisite for needing a body pillow. So how do you know if a body pillow is going to benefit you or someone you love?

Body pillows can be of great benefit to you regardless of the sleep position you prefer. Whether you are a back, side or stomach sleeper, body pillows can be used in a variety of ways to help support your spine and give you more comfortable, deeper and thereby more effective sleep.

Back sleepers can use a body pillow under one side to slightly turn their body, many times improving breathing position (and decreasing snoring) and reducing strain on the lower lumbar spine. The lower portion of the body pillow can also be placed under the knees to further reduce strain on the delicate sciatic and pelvic nerves as well as the lumbar nerve roots.

Body pillows are more than teddy bear replacements; they are long pillows which serve to give cushioning and support for the legs, hips and upper back when you lay on your side. A good body pillow keeps the spine in its proper alignment by supporting the shoulders and hips as it holds the arms and legs in a position perpendicular to the axis of the body.

Without a body pillow in place, your arms and legs fall down to the bed while side lying, folding your arms and legs across your body into a position known as adduction. Prolonged adduction of the shoulders and hips will interfere with proper blood flow and nerve function in both the arms and the legs. In several cases this can potentially cause and certainly aggravate carpal tunnel symptoms or numbness, tingling or pain in the hands, arms, legs or feet.

Keeping your arms and legs in their proper position also serves to prevent a number of common problems that interrupt a solid night’s sleep, including tossing and turning throughout the night, having to frequently reposition your pillow and leg cramps, all of which will keep you from getting into and staying in deeper sleep stages where the highest quality rest and healing occurs.

Stomach sleepers can use a body pillow to turn them enough to take the strain off from the neck and the upper back that causes stomach sleepers headaches, brachial plexus and carpal tunnel symptoms. By gradually positioning more and more of the body pillow under your torso you can progressively change from a face down position to one of side sleeping without the frustrating adjustment period of sleepless nights typically associated with trying to change sleep habits.

The reason that pregnant women love body pillows is because they can be used to help support the abdomen, relieving tension on the already overworked pelvic and abdominal muscles, tendons and ligaments. They also help to hold the pelvic joints in a natural, relaxed position, working to relieve low back pain commonly reported in the final months before delivery. Since side sleeping is essentially the only position which is healthy for both baby and mommy, getting added support in this position is critical.

A challenge that is commonly faced by body pillow users is managing multiple pillows with a limited amount of bed space. Cognizant of this, some pillow manufacturers have produced specially designed body pillows that eliminate the need for a separate head and neck pillow. This allows you optimal support and functionality without having to kick your spouse out of bed for need of more pillow space.

Added benefits to using a body pillow include being able to use it as a back support cushion while sitting up in bed, or as a wrap-around pillow/backrest/desk for reading, paying bills or doing your homework. Storing your body pillow is easy, as it can be stored across the top of the bed when you aren’t using it.

If you want to improve your quality and quantity of sleep, consider the benefits of a body pillow in addition to or in replacement of your current neck pillow. Supporting your body while you sleep pays great rewards in not only allowing you to sleep better, but also in helping you to wake refreshed and energized so that you can perform throughout the day at your peak potential.
