You def need to take a 5 minute break every hour or 2. Just get up and walk around, doing some stretching. You also want to lock your legs out once in awhile when you are sitting. Lock them out and squeeze, this should get your leggs to circulate more blood.

Are you active outside of work?
References :
First try to find out the root cause of your problem. I have seen lot of software guys having this problem since they doesn't take care of their nutrition and as a result of which starts having problem like back pain, poor digestion etc.
In your case nutritional supplements will definitely help. Plz contact me on bhavyagupta@yahoo.com for further details

You should see your Dr to make sure there are no herniated, slipped, etc discs. Don't go to a choropractor or try any other forms of self-treatment until you know what the problem is.

In the meantime, take ibuprofen for the pain and to help reduce any swelling. Also use ice packs for 20 minutes every hour for a couple of days. That too will help reduce swelling. If the ice makes it feel worse, switch to a heating pad to loosen the muscles.

When sleeping, if laying on your side, place a pillow between your knees. If on your back, place the pillow under the bend of your knees. This will help keep the spine in alignment and reduce your pain.

Good luck
References :
me--4 back surgeries and a lot of research and experience

you havent said upper back or lower back? Firstly get an MRI done (if you dont like closed machines, you can get an open MRI done) then you will know what the problem is.

If it is a slipdisc then ice at first, heat later. it takes 10 days of constant application of heat to feel better.

i work on the comp 8hrs a day but try to get up and walk every 1/2hr! working 10 hrs is silly, at what cost? spoiling your health?? not worth it!!

if not a slip disc, then probably back strain, i'd go for a massage. and heat. also wear a waist belt at all times, finally, take a painkiller. see if any of these work.

no cure for ANY back problem, only prevention. for that you have to be your own doctor. keep a diary recording when you get back pain. so then you know what actions to avoid in future.

good luck!
